Finger Lakes area highway crews rally for $250M road funding

Potholes keep piling up after a harsh winter, and local highway crews want Albany to send more money, according to RochesterFirst.

Leaders from towns like Canandaigua are pushing for at least $250 million through the state’s CHIPS program to repair roads and replace equipment. Officials say 87% of roads fall under local control and don’t qualify for federal aid, even though municipalities also maintain more than half of New York’s bridges.

They warn flat funding in this year’s budget could delay repairs and drive up long-term costs. Crews plan to press lawmakers in Albany on March 3 and 4 before the April 1 budget deadline.
