A candlelight vigil and march will bring people together in Watkins Glen later this month to remember those who have died in ICE custody or while peacefully protesting.
Hector/Schuyler County Indivisible is hosting the event on Thursday, Feb. 26 at 5:30 p.m., with activities expected to run until no later than 9 p.m.
Organizers plan to gather at the corner of 4th and Porter streets by Lafayette Park before marching to St. James Episcopal Church. Participants will carry the names of those who have died, along with battery-operated candles.
The evening will include a short vigil walk and a remembrance ceremony. Organizers will hold a candle-lighting ceremony in memory of those lost.
“We are going to hold a short vigil walk and remembrance ceremony in honor of those who have died while in ICE custody or while protesting peacefully,” wrote Marsha Smith, an organizer with the group.
She added, “I know that I have been deeply grieved by the loss of life at the hands of ICE. I am hoping that this will give us the opportunity to express our grief and sorrow, acknowledge those who have passed, and then have a chance to come together in unity and community to sing and be together.”
After the ceremony, attendees will gather inside St. James Episcopal Church for a sing-along led by Joe Chicone and possibly others. Warm refreshments will be served at the church.
Organizers say they expect a sizeable turnout. A link to sign up for the event is available online.
