William Smith hockey suffered a 2-1 overtime loss to Cortland in a key SUNYAC matchup Saturday afternoon at Alumni Arena, as the Red Dragons secured the extra conference point with a goal just over two minutes into overtime.
Hayley Hunter scored the game-winner for Cortland, finishing a rush into the offensive zone with a wrist shot over the blocker of William Smith goaltender Mia Iwicki. Iwicki turned in a standout performance, stopping 47 shots while playing the full 60-plus minutes, including 19 saves in the third period. The Red Dragons held a 49-16 advantage in shots on goal.
The Herons opened the scoring at 7:28 of the first period when a clearing attempt deflected off the boards and into the net, with first-year Finley Crosby credited for her sixth goal of the season. Cortland evened the game late in the second period when Carlen Bertrand picked up a loose puck in the slot and fired a shot under the crossbar, adding an assist later on the overtime winner.
William Smith finished 0-for-1 on the power play and did not commit a penalty, marking its first penalty-free game since January 25, 2025. The Herons also blocked 14 shots to help keep the game tied through regulation.
William Smith moved to 11-12-0 overall and 7-5-0 in SUNYAC play, while Cortland improved to 14-5-4 overall and 8-2-2 in conference action.
The Herons will close the regular season with road games at Canton on Friday, February 20, at 3 p.m., and Oswego on Saturday, February 21, at 3 p.m.
