New York drivers convicted of reckless, impaired or high-speed driving will soon rack up more points — and lose their licenses faster — according to the Times Union.
The updated DMV system takes effect next week. It assigns 11 points for DUI or driving without a license and keeps points on records for two years. Speeding in a construction zone will now trigger an automatic eight points. Failing to stop for a school bus jumps to eight points.
Attorneys expect more drivers to fight tickets in court, since 11 points can mean suspension and steep fees. State officials say the tougher rules target repeat and dangerous drivers, not motorists who follow the law.
