Ithaca sidewalk snow rules in effect

Snow-covered sidewalks can quickly turn into hazards, and Ithaca officials want property owners to clear them before that happens.

The City of Ithaca is reminding residents, businesses, and property owners that they must keep sidewalks free of snow and ice throughout the winter season.

City Code Chapter 178-3, Item J-4 requires sidewalks to stay clear. If someone fails to remove snow within the required timeframe, the City may step in, clear it, and charge the property owner for the cost.

Officials say clear sidewalks protect neighbors and support people of all ages and abilities. Children walking to school, older adults, and residents with mobility challenges depend on safe paths during and after winter storms.

Odd–even parking rules also remain in effect. Drivers must park on the even-numbered side of the street on the evening of even-numbered days, and on the odd-numbered side on the evening of odd-numbered days.

Cars parked on the wrong side can slow snowplows and create safety risks for the community. The City says those rules help crews clear roads efficiently and maintain access for emergency vehicles.

The Department of Public Works stays fully mobilized during winter storms. Crews handle street plowing, but officials say keeping sidewalks and streets safe requires cooperation from residents.

City leaders also encourage neighbors to help one another when possible. Anyone with a shovel and a few extra minutes can make a difference for someone who struggles to clear snow.

The City of Ithaca, located in New York’s Finger Lakes region, promotes sustainability, inclusivity, and a high quality of life for residents and visitors.
