Firefighters from multiple districts battled an early-morning structure fire Friday at a multi-unit residential building in the town of Lyons.
Emergency crews were dispatched around 3:30 a.m. to 78 Water St. Initial reports from the scene indicated difficulty getting water onto the building, prompting requests for additional engines and tankers from surrounding departments shortly before 4 a.m.
Around 4 a.m., crews appeared to establish a water supply and begin knocking down the flames. Command later advised that operations would be limited to an exterior attack only, suggesting firefighters were not entering the structure as crews worked to contain the blaze from outside.
Additional units that had been requested were later held at the Lyons Fire Department rather than brought directly to the scene. Shortly after 4:30 a.m., responders stopped providing benchmark updates to 911, though emergency operations remained active.
Highway officials and the local utility company were requested to the scene after 4:30 a.m. The Wayne County Department of Social Services building is located nearby.
As of 5 a.m., firefighters remained on scene. The cause of the fire and whether there were any injuries had not been released.
Officials are advising motorists and residents to avoid the area while emergency crews continue to work.
