Helming joins families for early literacy event in Marion

MARION — State Sen. Pam Helming joined local families this week for a toddler book club event aimed at promoting early literacy and childhood development in Wayne County.

The event, part of the Wayne County Community Schools Program’s new Play and Grow initiative, was held at Lollypops & Polkadots in Marion. The family-centered program is designed to support young children’s learning through play, connection and early literacy activities.

During the inaugural gathering, Helming read a winter-themed children’s story to toddlers and helped with a hands-on snack activity. The event also included interactive play opportunities intended to encourage early learning in a relaxed setting for families.

The Play and Grow initiative focuses on engaging, play-based experiences to build foundational skills for young children. Organizers said the program aims to create welcoming spaces where families can connect while supporting their children’s development.

Helming said introducing children to books at an early age helps lay the groundwork for lifelong curiosity and confidence. She added that events like the toddler book club not only promote a love of reading but also strengthen community connections among families.

The Wayne County Community Schools Program continues to host activities and resources designed to support early childhood education across the region.
