HWS, SUNY Schenectady seal transfer deal

Students at SUNY Schenectady will soon have a guaranteed path to a bachelor’s degree at Hobart and William Smith Colleges through a new transfer agreement.

The partnership guarantees admission and scholarship support for SUNY Schenectady graduates who meet academic requirements, creating a clearer and more affordable route to a four-year degree.

Leaders from both institutions signed the agreement Wednesday during a ceremony on the SUNY Schenectady campus. SUNY Schenectady Vice President for Academic Affairs Mark Meachem and HWS Provost and Dean of Faculty Sarah Kirk formalized the partnership.

Under the agreement, students who complete an associate degree with a 3.0 GPA or higher will receive guaranteed admission to HWS. Transfer students accepted with a GPA above 2.7 will also receive a scholarship of at least $30,500.

“This agreement reflects Hobart and William Smith’s deep commitment to educational access, opportunity and partnership,” HWS President Mark D. Gearan said. “By guaranteeing admission and meaningful scholarship support for SUNY Schenectady graduates, we are creating a clear, affordable pathway for talented students to pursue a bachelor’s degree.”

SUNY Schenectady President Steady Moono said the agreement recognizes the strength of the college’s academic programs and the preparation of its students.

“What makes this agreement particularly meaningful is its breadth and intentionality,” Moono said. “It recognizes the academic rigor of SUNY Schenectady programs across various disciplines and affirms that our students are well prepared to thrive at a highly-respected liberal arts institution.”

College leaders said the partnership reflects a shared focus on student success by reducing financial and academic barriers during the transfer process.

More information about the agreement is available through Hobart and William Smith Colleges.
