Top GOP rebukes Trump on elections

A rare public split emerged inside the GOP after President Donald Trump called for nationalizing U.S. elections, according to syracuse.com. Senate Majority Leader John Thune pushed back, saying federal control would violate the Constitution.

Thune said he supports voter ID and citizen-only voting but warned against federalizing elections, arguing decentralized systems are more secure. Trump floated the idea during a podcast appearance with Dan Bongino and repeated it later at the White House while again questioning the 2020 election.

The White House said Trump referenced a voting proposal focused on proof of citizenship. Still, his remarks reignited debate over state versus federal control as the election season ramps up.
