Trump stalls $16B rail tunnel project

Work on a massive rail tunnel linking New York and New Jersey is grinding to a halt after President Donald Trump cut off federal funding, according to POLITICO.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer blasted the move as “insane” and “absurd,” saying Trump alone stopped the Gateway Development Commission project. The $16 billion Gateway tunnel would replace aging rail tubes damaged by Superstorm Sandy.

Officials say construction is already slowing and could pause at most sites by early February. Unions warn the decision threatens up to 95,000 jobs, while New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill called the funding freeze an illegal attack on the region’s economy.
