Rally planned Monday in Geneva

Organizers are calling for an emergency rally Monday evening outside Geneva City Hall to protest immigration enforcement actions.

The rally is scheduled for 5 p.m. Jan. 26 at City Hall, 47 Castle St., and is being organized by the Geneva Women’s Assembly, the Finger Lakes Rapid Response Network, and the Party for Socialism and Liberation–FLX, with support from other community groups.

In a media advisory, organizers said the rally aims to oppose the actions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and U.S. Customs and Border Protection. They also said the rally will call for justice for Alex Pretti, an ICU nurse they say was killed by federal agents on Jan. 24.

The groups said they are acting in solidarity with organizers in Minnesota, pointing to recent large-scale protests and labor actions there. The advisory also claims immigration enforcement activity has increased in the Finger Lakes, including raids at homes and workplaces.

Following the rally, organizers plan to hold a forum at 6 p.m. at Trinity Place, 78 Castle St. The forum is titled “Freedom in Our Lifetime: Black Liberation Can’t Wait” and is intended to connect immigration issues with broader social justice movements.

The Finger Lakes Rapid Response Network said it has operated since 2019 and works across several counties to respond to immigration-related needs. The Geneva Women’s Assembly and the Party for Socialism and Liberation–FLX described themselves as grassroots organizations focused on social and economic justice.
