Canandaigua officials urge winter prep as cold, snow near

Town officials are urging Canandaigua residents to prepare for extreme cold and upcoming snow as winter weather tightens its grip on the area.

With dangerously low temperatures expected, the town is warning residents about the risk of frozen water pipes, which can lead to costly damage and service interruptions. Officials say a few simple steps can make a major difference during prolonged cold spells.

Town officials recommend insulating exposed pipes, sealing drafts near foundations and windows, and disconnecting outdoor hoses. Residents should also shut off exterior water valves when possible, keep garage doors closed where water lines are present, and maintain steady indoor temperatures. Letting faucets drip slightly during extreme cold can also help prevent freezing.

Officials also stress the importance of knowing where the main water shut-off valve is located and keeping water meters accessible.

“Taking a few minutes to prepare before temperatures drop can help prevent frozen pipes, water damage, and interruptions to service,” town officials said.

Snowplow operations ramp up

At the same time, the Town of Canandaigua Highway Department says crews are preparing for snow events and will be monitoring conditions around the clock. The department maintains nine designated snowplow routes, each taking three hours or more to complete per cycle, depending on snowfall and road conditions.

During heavy or prolonged storms, crews may need to plow the same routes multiple times. Main roads, emergency routes, and school bus routes receive priority before residential streets.

Officials are reminding residents that parking is prohibited on all town roads. Vehicles left on roadways slow plowing operations and create safety hazards and may be ticketed or towed during snow and ice events.

Residents are also warned that pushing snow from driveways or sidewalks into town roads is illegal under state law and can lead to enforcement action.

Safety reminders for residents

The highway department is asking residents to avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather, keep mailboxes and fire hydrants clear, and use caution when walking or driving in winter conditions. Officials also ask drivers and pedestrians to give snowplow operators plenty of space as crews work long hours in hazardous conditions.

Residents with questions about water service or highway operations are encouraged to contact the appropriate town department during regular business hours.
