Trump-appointed prosecutor steps down

A controversial U.S. attorney who targeted two of Donald Trump’s political rivals is leaving her post after judges ruled her appointment illegal, according to the Associated Press.

Lindsey Halligan exited her role as interim U.S. attorney for Eastern Virginia after her 120-day term expired and courts barred her from continuing. Judges said she lacked legal authority to hold the job and ordered her to stop using the title.

Halligan, appointed by Donald Trump, had pursued indictments against James Comey and Letitia James, but a judge later dismissed both cases. The Justice Department is appealing those rulings.
