Cats lounging behind deli counters could soon face statewide rules under a new Albany proposal, according to WSTM.
The bill would require the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets to set health and safety standards for cats living in bodegas. Introduced by Linda Rosenthal, the measure calls for regular vet visits, vaccinations, spaying or neutering, and a designated rest area inside stores.
Shop owners who don’t comply could face fines up to $2,000. Supporters, including Bodega Cats of NYC, say the bill moves cat workers closer to legal recognition. The proposal currently sits in committee.
