A box truck filled fast as residents dropped off Styrofoam they’d saved for months, according to The Citizen. Cayuga Climate Action collected about 40 cubic yards of packing foam during a one-day recycling event Jan. 10.
The group partnered with Riester’s Appliances, which used a densifier machine to compress bulky foam into solid bricks. Organizers say the process prevents non-biodegradable foam from sitting in landfills and leaching chemicals.
Drop-off sites also included Southern Cayuga Instant Aid and the Weedsport transfer station. Organizers stressed the event was a one-time opportunity due to limited recycling capacity.
