Auburn council to hear assessment update: What else is on the agenda tonight?

The Auburn City Council is scheduled to recognize Martin Luther King Jr. Day and hear a presentation on the citywide property reassessment during its meeting tonight at Memorial City Hall.

The meeting is set to begin at 5 p.m. with a work session, followed by the regular council meeting agenda.

Under ceremonial items, the council is slated to receive a Martin Luther King Jr. Day proclamation. The agenda lists the proclamation to be presented by Reverend Wilson, with a proclamation declaring Jan. 19, 2026, as a Day of Service in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the City of Auburn.

The agenda also includes a “Public to be Heard” portion, during which residents may address the council for up to three minutes on matters related to city government.

Council members are expected to take up approval of the Jan. 8, 2026, City Council meeting minutes, which the agenda notes will be forthcoming.

Later in the meeting, the council is scheduled to hear an assessment presentation from City Assessor Jeanne Hering. Materials included with the agenda outline a citywide reassessment update, describing the reassessment as a revenue-neutral process intended to ensure fairness and equity by updating property values to reflect current market conditions, as required by the city charter’s four-year reassessment cycle.

The presentation materials also state that assessment change notices are to be mailed Jan. 16 and will include current and estimated taxes, along with instructions for property owners who wish to contest their assessments.

Additional items on the agenda include the city manager’s report, reports from members of council, any SEQR resolutions, ordinances, local laws or resolutions that may be brought forward, and other business from the council. The meeting is scheduled to conclude with adjournment.

City officials note that council meetings may be viewed via live stream on the city’s website, and that Memorial City Hall will close 15 minutes after the meeting adjourns.
