Civics Bee invites local middle school students

Middle school students across the region have a chance to compete for cash prizes while sharpening their civics knowledge through a new partnership announced this month.

The Seneca County Chamber Community Foundation has teamed up with the National Civics Bee to give students in grades 6 through 8 the opportunity to compete locally, statewide, and nationally.

Students enter the 2026 National Civics Bee by submitting an essay that focuses on a problem, challenge, or opportunity in their community. The essay must outline steps to address the issue, identify support for the idea, and connect the proposal to core civic values.

Essays must be submitted by Feb. 3 at 11:59 p.m. Selected students will advance to a live regional competition.

The regional competition offers cash prizes of $500 for first place, $250 for second, and $125 for third. Regional finalists advance to a state competition, where first place earns $1,000 and a possible $5,000 donation to the student’s school.

State winners then move on to the National Championships in Washington, D.C., where the top prize includes $100,000 toward a 529 college savings plan.

Organizers say the competition helps students strengthen civics knowledge while also building writing and public speaking skills. Students also have the chance to connect with peers from across the region who share an interest in civic engagement.

All eligible students in grades 6 through 8 are invited to participate. More information is available through the Seneca County Chamber of Commerce or at nationalcivicsbee.org.
