Major CNY road improvement projects complete, state says

Drivers in Central New York will see smoother and safer trips after the state finished two major road projects in Onondaga and Oswego counties.

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the completion of $5 million in infrastructure improvements, including a rebuilt exit ramp off State Route 481 in the Town of Cicero and a new bridge along State Route 49 in the Town of West Monroe. State officials said both projects finished on time and on budget.

The larger project focused on Exit 1B from northbound Route 481 to East Circle Drive, a busy interchange used by nearly 12,000 vehicles a day. The $3 million upgrade expanded the ramp to include two left-turn lanes and a dedicated right-turn lane, easing congestion and improving traffic flow in a fast-growing area.

Crews also upgraded the traffic signal with overhead signage and a modern video detection system. Additional work strengthened the ramp’s foundation and added a new concrete median barrier along Route 481, with a wider shoulder to improve safety.

In Oswego County, the state replaced a deteriorating timber bridge on Route 49 over Big Bay Creek with a modern concrete structure. The $2 million project replaced a bridge built in 1941 with a more durable design intended to withstand weather and heavy daily use by about 10,000 motorists.

Route 49 serves as a key connection to Interstate 81 and provides access to homes, businesses, and popular lakeside destinations along Oneida Lake, including Sylvan Beach and Verona Beach.

Hochul said the projects support broader growth in the region, including major development tied to Micron and the I-81 Viaduct Project. State and federal officials said the upgrades will help keep traffic moving safely while supporting economic activity across Central New York.
