Citizen complaints lead to felony DWI arrest in Palmyra

Police arrested a man Saturday night after multiple complaints about a driver with a suspended license in the Village of Palmyra.

Jeffrey Vanderwege, 49, of West Main Street, was taken into custody around 8:38 p.m. on Jan. 11 following a traffic stop by the Palmyra Police Department.

Police said they received numerous reports that Vanderwege was operating a vehicle despite having a suspended driver’s license.

Officers located the vehicle, stopped it, and confirmed Vanderwege’s license was revoked.

While speaking with Vanderwege, officers observed signs consistent with alcohol impairment. Police said Vanderwege admitted he had left a local bar and consumed alcoholic beverages before driving.

Vanderwege did not submit to a breath test.

Police charged Vanderwege with unlicensed operator, two counts of aggravated unlicensed operation in the first degree, aggravated unlicensed operation in the second degree, felony driving while intoxicated, and refusal to submit to a chemical test.

Officers transported Vanderwege to the Palmyra Police Department for processing. Police later took him to the Wayne County Jail for CAP arraignment.
