Deputies arrested a man after a vehicle crash on a Finger Lakes Community College campus led officers to a firearm inside the car.
John Robert Burkett, 81, of Honeoye, now faces a felony charge after investigators determined the gun violated state law on college property .
Ontario County sheriff’s deputies assisted Finger Lakes Community College Campus Police around 5:17 p.m. on Jan. 10 following a motor vehicle crash on campus property in the Town of Hopewell.
During the investigation, officers learned a firearm sat inside the involved vehicle. Deputies later identified the weapon as a .22 caliber revolver.
Investigators determined Burkett lawfully owned the revolver and listed it on his pistol permit. New York State law, however, bans firearm possession on college campus property.
Because of that restriction, the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office took over the case as a felony-level offense.
Deputies took Burkett into custody around 1:21 p.m. on Jan. 11 at his home in the Town of Richmond. Officers issued him an appearance ticket and released him.
He must appear in Hopewell Town Court to answer the charge.
