Packed seats and loud support filled a county meeting as local lawmakers took sides, according to WENY.
The Tompkins County Legislature unanimously approved a resolution endorsing nurses at Cayuga Medical Center as they move toward unionizing. Nurses say staffing shortages, lost benefits, and heavier workloads pushed them to organize.
Legislators said more than 70% of nurses already signed union authorization cards, calling the upcoming election unnecessary but critical. Community members and labor leaders packed the chamber to show support.
Nurses are set to vote Jan. 14 on whether to formally authorize a union, saying the effort centers on patient care and long-term stability.
