Steuben County woman charged in welfare fraud case

Investigators arrested a Steuben County woman after authorities said she wrongfully collected public assistance benefits.

The Steuben County Sheriff’s Office identified the woman as Autumn M. Kosmowski, 35, of Main Street in Dansville.

Sheriff Jim Allard said investigators arrested Kosmowski on Monday following an investigation involving the Steuben County Department of Social Services.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, Kosmowski allegedly submitted a false instrument for filing to the Department of Social Services between July 28 and Oct. 31. Investigators said she received $2,397 in benefits she was not eligible to receive.

Kosmowski faces multiple felony charges, including offering a false instrument for filing in the first degree, falsifying business records in the first degree, welfare fraud in the fourth degree, and grand larceny in the fourth degree. All charges are Class E felonies.

Investigators processed Kosmowski at the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities later issued her an appearance ticket for Village of Bath Court, where she is scheduled to appear at a later date.

Sheriff Allard thanked the Steuben County Department of Social Services Fraud and Legal Affairs Unit and the Steuben County District Attorney’s Office for their assistance in the investigation.
