A long-running sexual abuse investigation in Lyons ended with a grand jury indictment and an arrest this week.
Deputies arrested a 38-year-old Lyons man Monday morning on a grand jury indictment warrant following an investigation into repeated sexual abuse of a child. The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office identified the man as Matthew J. Hagar of 157 Layton Street.
A Wayne County grand jury issued the indictment Nov. 21, charging Hagar with 12 felony counts tied to abuse that investigators say continued for years until the victim reached adulthood. The charges include multiple counts of rape in the first degree, predatory sexual assault against a child, incest in the first degree, course of sexual conduct against a child in the first degree, and predatory sexual assault against a child.
Investigators reported that the victim was a female relative of Hagar and that the abuse occurred over an extended period of time.
Authorities also said Hagar was on probation when the alleged crimes occurred. That probation stemmed from a prior conviction for criminal sexual act in the second degree involving a victim under the age of 15. Officials identified Hagar as a level three sex offender, and the new allegations violated the terms of his probation.
A judge arraigned Hagar in Wayne County Court. The court remanded him to the Wayne County Jail without bail on all charges.
