Tage Thompson scores again as Sabres hold off Flyers for fourth straight win

Tage Thompson continued his hot stretch by scoring for the fifth straight game, and the Buffalo Sabres extended their win streak to four with a 5-3 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday night at KeyBank Center.

Buffalo (15-14-4) received contributions throughout the lineup, with Zach Benson and Mattias Samuelsson each recording two assists. Alex Lyon turned aside 24 shots in his fourth straight start.

Jack Quinn opened the scoring midway through the first period, tipping a point shot from Samuelsson past Flyers goaltender Samuel Ersson to give Buffalo an early lead. Philadelphia answered quickly, tying the game less than a minute later, and then moved in front early in the second period.

The Sabres responded behind Thompson, who evened the score late in the second with a sharp wrist shot from the right circle after a slick setup by Rasmus Dahlin. Thompson’s goal was his fifth during the current streak and helped shift momentum back to Buffalo.

With 30 seconds left in the period, Noah Ostlund put the Sabres back on top, firing a wrist shot through traffic off a feed from Owen Power for a 3-2 lead heading into the intermission.

Buffalo added breathing room in the third when Josh Norris converted on the power play, finishing a pass from Benson to make it 4-2. Philadelphia pulled within one midway through the period, but the Sabres held firm down the stretch.

Ryan McLeod sealed the outcome with an empty-net goal in the final seconds, closing out a strong all-around effort as Buffalo sent Philadelphia away empty-handed.
