Clifton Springs family highlights local effort to reduce rising childbirth complications

Complications during childbirth are climbing nationwide, and Excellus BlueCross BlueShield says community partnerships play a key role in reversing that trend.

The Rochester-based health plan says childbirth complications have risen more than 30% across the country. Federal data also show Black women face three times the risk of dying from pregnancy-related complications, many of which are preventable .

To address those risks, Excellus BCBS says it is expanding clinical programs and working with local organizations to improve access to prenatal and postpartum care.

Local partnerships support families

This year, Excellus BCBS partnered with Child and Family Resources’ Healthy Families Program in Ontario, Yates, and Seneca counties. The program provides free home visits, developmental screenings, and parenting education from pregnancy through a child’s first five years.

For Jennifer Kemak of Clifton Springs, the program offered support during her pregnancy with her second son.

“I’ve described it as visiting with an old friend that you haven’t seen in a while,” Kemak said. “It just feels like a nice warm hug, you know, from everybody.”

Program manager Sarah Scorsone said the focus stays on connection and follow-through. “We stress the importance of connecting – making sure that those well child visits, immunizations are being tracked, pre- and post-natal visits are happening,” she said.

Why early care matters

Excellus BCBS points to gaps in care as a major concern. One in four pregnant people miss recommended prenatal visits, and nearly half skip postpartum checkups.

“Regular prenatal care allows us to identify issues early and intervene so both mother and baby have the best chance for healthy outcomes,” said Dr. Kathleen Robischon, vice president of medical affairs and clinical services at Excellus BCBS.

The insurer uses national quality measures to track prenatal visits, postpartum care, immunizations, and mental health screenings. It also supports programs such as nurse care management for high-risk pregnancies, doula services, and expanded community partnerships.

“Maternal health impacts all of us. Together, we can ensure care that’s equitable and high-quality,” Robischon said.
