Suspected TB case probed at jail

Health officials are responding after a former Broome County Jail inmate landed in the hospital with a suspected case of tuberculosis, according to WIVT.

The man remains hospitalized while doctors test whether he has active tuberculosis. County health leaders stressed that testing has not confirmed TB and said respiratory issues alone do not mean an outbreak.

Public health officials explained that many people carry latent TB without symptoms and do not spread it. They said active TB cases involve severe coughing and fever, which investigators have not confirmed.

The sheriff’s office said the jail continues standard precautions, including offering masks to inmates and staff, while the investigation continues.
