Several bipartisan measures cleared their final hurdle Friday as President Donald Trump signed five congressional bills into law.
The legislation includes measures honoring Olympic athletes, expanding protections for service members and veterans, and updating rules for a national legal foundation.
Honoring the Miracle on Ice

One of the bills, H.R. 452, awards three Congressional Gold Medals to members of the 1980 U.S. Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey team. The team’s upset victory over the Soviet Union became known as the “Miracle on Ice.”
The medals recognize the players’ historic achievement and its lasting impact on American sports and culture.
Changes for service members and veterans
Several of the new laws focus on veterans’ benefits and fairness in education.
H.R. 970 requires the Department of Veterans Affairs to periodically review automatic maximum coverage under the Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance and Veterans’ Group Life Insurance programs.
H.R. 983 addresses tuition costs for members of the Selected Reserves. The bill requires the VA to disapprove courses offered by schools that charge higher-than-in-state tuition to reserve members who live in that state.
Another measure, H.R. 1912, improves how the VA repays veterans when their benefits are misused by a fiduciary.
Updates to a federal charter
The final bill signed, S. 616, updates the federal charter for the Foundation of the Federal Bar Association. The change allows certain corporate requirements to be set through the foundation’s bylaws instead of federal statute.
The White House announced the bill signings Friday as part of its regular briefing on newly enacted legislation.
