A fire-damaged Auburn apartment house could soon get new life as affordable housing, according to The Citizen. The owners want tax abatements to help finance a $4.3 million rehabilitation at 40–42 South St.
The Auburn Industrial Development Authority will consider $81,510 in tax breaks tied to sales, use, and mortgage recording taxes. The project would create 22 apartments for workers earning up to 60% of the area’s median income, with rents under $1,000.
The building has stood condemned since a 2022 fire that forced rescues of five tenants. AIDA officials will weigh the request despite noting past tax delinquencies and code violations linked to the owners.
