A woman is facing felony theft charges after police say she stole a shopper’s bag containing more than $1,300 in cash at the Walmart on Grant Avenue in Auburn.
The theft happened on November 24, according to a media release from the Auburn Police Department. Officers responded around 2:48 p.m. after the victim, who had finished shopping and was waiting in the vestibule for a ride, realized her bag was missing from her shopping cart.
The woman told police she had looked down at her phone for a few minutes and didn’t notice the bag was gone until later. Inside the stolen bag were her birth certificate, wallet, several credit and debit cards, and $1,300 in U.S. currency.
Surveillance footage showed a woman removing the bag from the victim’s cart and walking off. Investigators identified the suspect as Carrie A. Larrabee, 40, of Port Byron. She was located at Olympia Terrace Apartments and taken into custody without incident.
Larrabee was charged with three counts of grand larceny in the fourth degree, all Class E felonies. She was taken to the Cayuga County Jail and held pending arraignment.
