Strong winds and lake effect snow are on the way, and utility crews across New York are already on alert.
New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) and Rochester Gas and Electric (RG&E) announced they’re preparing for a winter storm expected to roll in Wednesday night and last through Saturday — right in the middle of Thanksgiving travel plans.
130 extra crews ready to go
The two companies say they’ve secured 130 additional line crews to respond to possible outages. In total, more than 1,700 line and tree personnel are standing by statewide. The most significant impacts are expected in NYSEG’s Lancaster, Lockport, Elmira, Geneva, Auburn, and Hornell divisions, and all divisions served by RG&E.
Counties likely to be hit hardest include Erie, Niagara, Chemung, Ontario, Seneca, Yates, and others across western and central New York.
Forecasts call for winds up to 55 mph and heavy snow, especially downwind of Lake Erie. The combination could knock down trees and power lines, causing service interruptions.
How to stay safe and prepared
NYSEG and RG&E are urging customers to stay informed through their websites, mobile apps, and social media. They also offered tips to prepare for potential outages:
- Keep phones charged and stock up on non-perishables and drinking water
- Download the NYSEG or RG&E app for outage updates
- Stay 30 feet away from downed wires and report them immediately
- Call NYSEG at 1-800-572-1131 or RG&E at 1-800-743-1701 to report outages or hazards
Restoration priorities
If outages happen, crews will first address downed wires and public safety issues before restoring power to homes and businesses. The companies emphasized they’re ready with bucket trucks, backhoes, and other equipment to get the job done quickly and safely.
