Edwin Díaz added to his résumé Thursday when he captured the Trevor Hoffman National League Reliever of the Year Award for 2025, becoming just the third pitcher, alongside Josh Hader and Kenley Jansen, to win the honor more than once. The New York Mets closer was also selected to the All-MLB Second Team, capping off a standout campaign.
Díaz’s season didn’t start smoothly as he worked his way back from injury, but the right-hander quickly rediscovered the form that once made him baseball’s most overpowering late-inning weapon. By midseason, he had firmly reestablished himself as manager Carlos Mendoza’s most reliable bullpen option.
The 31-year-old converted 28-of-31 save chances, ranking fifth in the National League, and paired that success with dominant underlying numbers. He posted a 1.63 ERA, a 0.87 WHIP, and an impressive 13.3 strikeouts per nine innings.
Díaz now heads into free agency after opting out of his contract with the Mets. While he has expressed interest in continuing his tenure in Queens, he noted before the awards ceremony that his chances of re-signing sit at “about 50-50.”
