Rochester Regional Health is offering a first-of-its-kind opportunity for local residents to get ahead of serious health conditions — starting with their genes.
The healthcare system announced the launch of GenoWell, a no-cost genetic screening initiative designed to identify hidden health risks for conditions like certain cancers and heart disease. The program, created in partnership with Helix, aims to enroll more than 100,000 people over the next five years.
The goal? Equip individuals with personalized insights about their genetic risk — before symptoms appear.
“Serving our communities with compassion and cutting-edge care is in our genes,” said RRH CEO Dr. Chip Davis. “GenoWell brings that promise into the 21st century.”
What GenoWell does
The program offers free DNA testing to adults 18 and older — no insurance required. Results can uncover genetic markers tied to conditions such as:
- Inherited breast and ovarian cancer
- Colorectal cancer
- Familial hypercholesterolemia (a genetic cause of high cholesterol)
Participants can then work with their providers to build a proactive care plan.
Sheri Nordberg, one of the first GenoWell participants, said the benefit is peace of mind: “Learning that I carry a higher risk for something I can take action on now means I have more control over my future… and watching my grandbabies grow.”
Part of a national network
GenoWell also connects Rochester Regional Health to the Helix Research Network, a collaboration of major health systems across North America working to integrate genomics into everyday care and expand access to clinical trials and research.
