FLCC nursing grads beat state average with 93% pass rate

Nursing graduates from Finger Lakes Community College are outpacing the state and national averages on their licensing exams.

This year, 93 percent of FLCC students who took the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) passed on their first try. That’s 42 out of 45 graduates from the classes of December 2024 and May 2025.

FLCC’s pass rate tops the statewide average of 83 percent and the national average of 87 percent, according to the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.

“This high pass rate reflects a remarkable effort by our nursing instructors and staff,” said Shayna Turner-Johnson, chair of the FLCC Nursing Department. She credited the team for adapting to major updates in curriculum and facilities over the last few years.

The college’s nursing program has seen big changes since opening the Sands Family Center for Allied Health in 2022. In 2023, FLCC started accepting new students twice a year, and the first midyear class graduated in late 2024.

FLCC also launched a licensed practical nursing (LPN) program in 2024, with the first group of students graduating this past August.

The college’s nursing degree can be completed in two years and is part of SUNY Reconnect, a program that covers tuition and books for eligible adults ages 25 to 55.
