If your power goes out on a sunny day, NYSEG or RG&E says you’ll receive a call to explain why.
The utilities announced a new initiative that will notify customers by phone after major outages, helping explain what caused the disruption — whether it was a fallen tree, a car hitting a utility pole, or something else.
“This call will help keep our customers informed,” said Christine Alexander, vice president of customer service. “It’s one more way for us to connect.”
Customers will receive a recorded message within two hours of full restoration if the outage affected at least 500 people. The calls will only go out Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., and not during active storms or smaller outages.
The companies are also encouraging customers to sign up for outage alerts, which provide real-time updates during an outage and notify you when power is restored or if system upgrades are planned nearby.
To enroll, customers can log into their accounts at nyseg.com or rge.com.
