Cooler weather is here and as we begin to heat our homes and workspaces, it is the perfect time to be mindful of fire prevention. Fire prevention should focus on specific behaviors in the workplace and at home.
Inspect fire extinguishers and smoke alarms and always use caution and avoid distractions when working with open flames.
According to the local fire departments, candles can be especially risky. Always heat living spaces safely and always unplug space heaters when sleeping and leaving a room.
If there are frequent electrical issues or tripped circuit breakers, have these items inspected by a qualified professional.
Also, on an annual basis at home, it is recommended to re-visit and re-fresh emergency action plans and ensure everyone knows what actions to take.
Additional fire and emergency items to review at home:
- Be sure to change alkaline batteries in the smoke & CO alarms.
- Is the escape diagram up to date?
- Are the fire extinguishers in working order?
- Are the smoke and CO alarms inspected & free of debris & dust?
- Check escape routes for hazards or obstacles.
