Amish buggy hit by car in Herkimer County

An Amish buggy was struck by a speeding car Friday morning in the town of Schuyler, throwing both occupants onto the road and sending one to the hospital, State Police said.

Troopers say the crash happened around 7:58 a.m. on Cosby Manor Road, when a 2011 Volkswagen Jetta tried to pass the buggy at an unsafe speed.

The driver, 45-year-old Matthew L. Walker of Remsen, was following the horse-drawn buggy too closely before attempting to pass. During the maneuver, he collided with the buggy, ejecting both riders.

One of the buggy occupants, Andy J. Troyer, 30, of Poland, was taken to Wynn Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The other, 40-year-old Moses J. Swartzentruber, also of Poland, was not hurt. The horse was not injured.

Walker was not hurt but faces several traffic violations, including:

  • Driving without a license
  • Aggravated unlicensed operation
  • Unsafe passing
  • Failure to keep right
  • Speeding under special hazards
  • Operating without a required interlock device

The investigation is ongoing.
