NY smoking rate hits record low, but risks remain

New York’s adult smoking rate has dropped to just 9.3% — the lowest ever recorded, according to CNY Central. Health leaders say the decline reflects decades of education, policy, and support programs aimed at curbing tobacco use.

Despite the progress, over 1.4 million New Yorkers still smoke. Rates remain highest among people with limited education, no insurance, or mental health issues — groups long targeted by tobacco companies.

Officials say continued prevention and cessation support is key to protecting future generations.
