Officer injured in inmate attack at Five Points Correctional Facility

An officer at Five Points Correctional Facility was injured earlier this month after a violent struggle with an inmate who refused to return to his cell.

The incident happened on the morning of September 13 in the Romulus-based maximum security prison. Two officers were monitoring inmates during recreation when one inmate became aggressive and refused multiple orders to return to his cell, according to facility officials.

The inmate allegedly clenched his fists and took an aggressive stance. Officers attempted to physically return him to his cell, but he resisted — swinging, kicking, and continuing to fight as backup arrived. It took several officers to finally subdue him, cuff his arms, and escort him to a holding cell.

One officer suffered a knee injury during the incident and was taken to Geneva Hospital for treatment after receiving initial care from prison medical staff.

The 22-year-old inmate, who is serving a seven-year sentence for attempted murder in Kings County, was moved to a Special Housing Unit and now faces disciplinary charges.

In a statement, NYSCOPBA Western Region Vice President Kenny Gold criticized what he called a lack of support from lawmakers for prison staff, saying, “Day after day, officers across the state are being attacked by inmates and wind up in local hospitals with injuries… This must stop otherwise one day we will have a member killed at the hands of an inmate.”

Gold called on state leaders to support the recommendations of the HALT Committee — a joint union and department group working on prison safety reforms.
