The Skaneateles Library has officially launched the public phase of its “It Takes a Library” campaign — a community-driven effort to fund a modern, fully accessible new library on Fennell Street.
After raising $6 million during a quiet phase, library leaders are now inviting the broader community to help raise an additional $3 million toward the project’s $15 million goal.
“This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to create a space where everyone — families, students, seniors, and professionals — can connect, learn, and thrive,” said Library Board President Dave Hempson.
A future-ready library for all
Designed by Boston architecture firm Oudens Ello, the new library will offer:
- Full ADA accessibility
- Ample parking
- Community meeting rooms
- Study and tutoring spaces
- Outdoor programming areas
- A used bookstore and gift shop
- A café
- Upgraded technology and infrastructure
Located at 75 Fennell Street, the new facility aims to serve as a flexible, future-ready hub for education and community connection.
Why it matters
Library leaders say closing the fundraising gap through private donations will help minimize taxpayer burden and ensure strong community buy-in. They emphasize that every gift counts — no matter the size.
“We’ve been humbled by the generosity of early supporters,” said Campaign Fundraising Chair Erin McCormack, “and now it’s time to open the door for every member of our community to be part of building something extraordinary.”
