Cayuga Speaker Series returns with focus on addiction and recovery

Cayuga Community College is bringing back its popular Cultural Speaker Series this fall, kicking off with an in-depth conversation about addiction, stigma, and the power of community support.

The first talk, “Understanding Addiction: A Dialogue on Reasons, Roles and Recovery,” will be led by Dr. Jerimy Blowers, a licensed mental health counselor and professor at Cayuga. The event is free and open to the public — held Monday, Sept. 22, at the Auburn Campus and again on Monday, Oct. 20, at the Fulton Campus. Both start at 4 p.m.

Blowers has spent more than 20 years in behavioral health and higher education. He currently serves as the college’s coordinator of Wellness and Intervention Services.

“Part of this dialogue is about understanding a true definition of addiction and substance abuse,” said Blowers, “and the role each of us can play in spreading hope and assisting people in our community who are battling addiction.”

Breaking down stigma and building understanding

The fall series will focus on personal and community well-being, starting with addiction — a topic that often comes with misunderstanding and silence, according to Blowers. He says stigma is one of the biggest barriers keeping people from getting the help they need.

Emily Cameron, Director of Community Education and Workforce Development at Cayuga, said Dr. Blowers brings a compassionate, accessible approach to difficult topics.

“He’s an empathetic speaker who has a wonderful ability to connect with people,” she said. “His discussion will help people who are seeking ways to support friends and family members in recovery.”
