Lawsuit claims mentally ill inmates held in isolation

Nine inmates at Marcy Correctional Facility are being locked in their cells nearly 24/7 without treatment, in violation of state law, according to a federal lawsuit filed Monday, Times Union reports.

The suit accuses New York corrections officials of holding mentally ill prisoners in near-solitary confinement, despite laws requiring therapy and out-of-cell time. Advocates say conditions are inhumane—hot cells, filthy recreation pens, and no access to services.

The state blames staffing shortages, but plaintiffs argue these failures breach state and federal disability protections.
