Nursing home residents push to raise $50 allowance

Residents at Monroe Community Hospital say $50 a month doesn’t cut it anymore, and they’re calling on lawmakers to raise the personal needs allowance, according to WHAM.

The allowance — unchanged since 1988 — covers extras like meals out or church trips. Advocates want it increased to $200 and adjusted for inflation. Though a bill exists, it’s been stuck in committee for years.

Lawmakers on both sides support a raise, but say long-term funding remains the challenge.
