Onondaga County adds 7% tax to short-term rentals

Airbnb and VRBO stays in Onondaga County will now face a 7% room occupancy tax, matching what hotels already pay, according to WSYR.

Lawmakers say the tax will help fund infrastructure impacted by tourism and promote travel to the region. It applies to renters — not property owners — and takes effect by year’s end.

The move follows a new state law requiring a separate 2% tax on short-term stays over $2. Officials don’t expect the added cost will deter visitors.
