Nadler to retire after 17 terms in Congress

After nearly four decades in office, Rep. Jerry Nadler says he’s stepping aside to make room for new leadership, according to the New York Times.

The 78-year-old Democrat cited President Biden’s shortened 2024 campaign as a wake-up call for generational change. He told the Times a younger representative might better serve his New York district.

Nadler chaired the House Judiciary Committee until 2023, then stepped down from the ranking role last year—just as Rep. Jamie Raskin launched a successful bid to replace him. Nadler also hinted that more senior Democrats should consider retiring, especially with what he called the threat of “incipient fascism” under Donald Trump.
