Social Security payment dates for September 2025

Stimulus payments worth up to $1400 are going out in these 4 states

Most Social Security beneficiaries will receive their September 2025 payments on schedule. But if you only receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI), don’t expect a deposit this month. Here’s why—and when everyone else should expect their money.

September 2025 Social Security payment schedule

If you collect Social Security retirement benefits (not SSI), your payment date depends on your birthdate or whether you started receiving benefits before May 1997:

  • Wednesday, Sept. 3: For those who began receiving benefits before May 1997
  • Wednesday, Sept. 10: For birthdays on the 1st–10th
  • Wednesday, Sept. 17: For birthdays on the 11th–20th
  • Wednesday, Sept. 24: For birthdays on the 21st–31st

Direct deposits typically arrive by 9 a.m. on the scheduled day. Paper checks may take longer.

Why SSI recipients won’t receive a September payment

If you receive only SSI, you will not get a payment this month. That’s because September 1 falls on Labor Day, and by Social Security Administration (SSA) policy, payments due on weekends or federal holidays are sent the previous business day.

  • SSI payments for September were issued early, on Friday, August 29.

This is normal and happens several times a year when holidays disrupt the usual payment cycle.

What to do if your Social Security payment is missing

If your payment hasn’t arrived by the expected date, the SSA recommends:

  • Wait three additional mailing days
  • Then call 1-800-772-1213 (TTY: 1-800-325-0778), weekdays 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Most payments are made via direct deposit, and delays are rare—but they can happen due to banking issues or address changes.
