Unattended burn barrel sparks garage fire in Farmington

An unattended burn barrel is believed to have sparked a fire that destroyed a detached garage in Farmington Saturday afternoon, according to the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded just before 5 p.m. to 4401 Kyte Road, where they found the garage fully engulfed in flames. The property belongs to Bruce Haug, 68, of Shortsville.

Deputies used water from the residence to help contain the fire until Manchester firefighters arrived and took over. Crews from Shortsville, Farmington, and Clifton Springs also responded to the scene.

No one was hurt, and the fire was extinguished before it could spread further. Investigators say the fire likely started from a burn barrel that had been left unattended, but the cause is still under review.
