Citing a toxic political climate and lack of support, Marion Town Supervisor Summer Johnson announced Wednesday she is withdrawing from the November race.
In a public statement, Johnson said the decision came after “much reflection and discussion” with her family. While she called serving as town supervisor one of the greatest honors of her life, she pointed to persistent challenges within local government that ultimately led her to step aside.
Johnson described a system that discourages collaboration, limits community involvement, and rewards only a “select few.” She also said she faced unprofessional conduct and bullying that made it difficult to maintain the level of service residents deserve.
“The lack of consistent support, coupled with the absence of effective performance measures for the job, has made it increasingly difficult,” she said in the release.
Johnson, who has chaired the Health and Medical Committee and served as vice chair of the ED&P Committee, promised to serve out the rest of her term and ensure a smooth transition.
She closed by thanking her supporters and advisors — including political ally Jennifer Williams — and said she remains committed to civic life in new forms moving forward.
