Electrical fault sparks massive barn fire in Geneva

A large barn went up in flames Tuesday night in Geneva, destroying the structure but sparing the homeowner from injury.

Deputies and fire crews responded to 668 Reed Road around 10:07 p.m., where they found the barn fully engulfed.

According to the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office, 22-year-old homeowner Matthew Shirk was home at the time but was not hurt.

Investigators determined the fire started from an electrical fence charger inside the barn. Despite efforts from multiple fire departments, the barn was a total loss.

Crews from more than a dozen departments responded, and Reed Road was shut down during the firefight.
