Gov. Kathy Hochul is fully embracing partisan redistricting in New York, signaling a dramatic shift in strategy as states like Texas push GOP-friendly maps. Speaking alongside fleeing Texas Democrats, Hochul said it’s time for Democrats to stop playing fair when Republicans don’t.
She’s pushing for new congressional maps that could give Democrats a majority in 22 of New York’s 26 districts by 2028. Hochul also called for bypassing the state’s independent redistricting rules, arguing the national political landscape demands more aggressive tactics.
Top Democrats, including Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie, support the plan, with a constitutional amendment possibly heading to voters in 2027.
