New York State hunters can now purchase licenses and Deer Management Permits (DMPs) for the 2025-26 season, the Department of Environmental Conservation announced Monday.
“Hunting and trapping are long-standing traditions in New York, and preparation is already underway for the upcoming seasons,” said DEC Commissioner Amanda Lefton. “We encourage experienced hunters to mentor newcomers and help grow the next generation of our sporting community.”
Licenses and permits are available online, by phone, and at license-issuing agents statewide. Hunting and trapping licenses are valid from September 1 through August 31, while fishing licenses remain valid for 365 days from purchase.
DMPs, which allow the harvest of antlerless deer, are available through October 1 and are issued via an instant random selection process at the point of sale. Hunters can find their unit’s selection odds on the DEC website or by calling the DMP Hotline.
The DEC is also promoting the $5 Habitat & Access Stamp, which funds projects such as wildlife observation platforms and stream restoration. This year’s stamp features the American kestrel.
The agency encourages the use of the HuntFishNY mobile app, which allows hunters to display licenses, report harvests, and access key information directly from their smartphones.
First-time hunters and trappers must complete education courses before purchasing a license. Both in-person and online training options are available, with courses covering hunter safety and bowhunter certification. Online courses range from $24.95 to $30 and are open to New York State residents.
Licenses will also be sold at the DEC Aquarium building during the Great New York State Fair from August 20 to September 1. Only credit and debit card payments are accepted at this location.
More information is available on the DEC website.
